Pitcher Pavers

What are Bluestone Pitcher Pavers?

A pitcher, when used in this context, is a stone used for paving. As our pavers are cut from reclaimed Bluestone Blocks they are Bluestone Pitcher Pavers. They could also be referred to as Bluestone Pavers, Cobblestone Pavers, Pitcher Pavers or Pitchers.

Bluestone is also known as Basalt, is a hard but permeable rock used prominently as a building material in Melbourne CBD and surrounding suburbs since 1850. It was used in buildings, foundations, gutter edging and paving. You may think of it as cobblestone.

We create Bluestone Pitcher Pavers by recycling heritage Victorian Bluestone blocks, pitchers, into thicknesses required for you situation.

Bluestone History

Victorian bluestone is a basalt or olivine basalt, quarried from the Victorian layer of basalt from Melbourne in the east, to Portland in the west, and as far north as the Great Dividing Range.  It’s blueish-grey colour giving it its name.

It was first quarried in the 1830s and 1840s, throughout several locations in Melbourne, guaranteeing an abundant supply of bluestone for Melbourne’s early buildings, curbing and laneways in an attempt to replicate Englands cobblestone streets.

Basalt was plentiful at that time and stronger than the majority of other building materials available and was therefore abundantly utilised. The Bluestone pitchers, or paving blocks, were originally split by hand to inconsistent sizes.

Bitumen and asphalt has replaced a lot of the surfaces that were formerly bluestone pitchers and we couldn’t let these beautiful pieces of stone go to waste. So we recycle them into our pitcher pavers.

Unless you are planning to utilise bluestone pitchers naturally permeability we recommend that you always seal your bluestone pitcher pavers with a stone enhancer sealer. It not only brings out the beautiful bluestone colouring but also makes it waterproof, stainproof and maintains slip resistance.

Sealing is recommended for all natural stone tiles and pavers. A range of sealers suitable for various applications are available. We can supply stone cleaning & sealing products.
